In
the Beginning.... Thurrock
Heritage Forum evolved from an initiative by Thurrock Council in September
1996 at the Civic Offices Grays, between residents of Thurrock and council
officers; the meeting concluded that, amongst other areas, a strong
'heritage' theme existed in Thurrock, which supported the roles of the
museum, tourism and community pride, but had not been fully explored.
From this
initial approach a further event was organised by a steering committee
focusing on heritage and conservation of the
environment of Thurrock. this
well publicised all day meeting 'Here Today, Gone Tomorrow?' was held in the
Adult Community College, Bridge Road Grays, February 1997 and attended by
over 200 residents. It focused on different concerns and possible projects
which could be derived from our heritage; as a direct result of the meeting
Thurrock Heritage Forum was formed. Today, there are nearly forty members
working
towards raising the profile of Thurrock's rich & varied history. This
site should explain our role, we will be pleased to answer any questions on
Thurrock's
heritage.
